My post on reporting abuse on KevinMD

My recent post on mandatory reporting of intimate partner abuse being possibly more of an emotional response for the caregiver rather than good care for the victim has been republished at KevinMD:

Should every case of domestic abuse be reported?

Go check it out. There are some great comments there, as there were here.

Much more fun than studying

I am cramming for my last exam in medical school tomorrow. Scratch that, I am procrastinating instead of studying. I will be speaking at the VBAC Summit again this year, and had to write a bio. As much as I didn’t want to write about myself, it was much more fun than studying.

Hilary Gerber is a pre-doctoral research fellow who will be graduating from medical school in two weeks. After completing a traditional internship, she hopes to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology. Her fellowship research focused on evidence based labor and delivery interventions. Before medical school, Hilary gave birth twice with the help of midwives, once in a hospital, and once at a free standing birth center. She would love to have a home birth if it didn’t involve having another baby. She trained as a direct entry midwife and worked as a doula. Her article “Social Media, Power, and the Future of VBAC” was published in the Journal of Perinatal Education. Her sometimes dormant blog “Mom’s Tinfoil Hat” is not peer reviewed, however. She also has a studio art degree, has delivered pizzas, worked the graveyard shift at Denny’s, wrote a parenting blog for Mtv, and was in a band that is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Back to twitter

I have decided to go back to Twitter. But, I can’t remember my password, apparently, and the email account I had when I signed up for Twitter was cancelled by my lovely ex, so I can’t get the password sent to me.

So, I started a new Twitter account as @momstinfoilhat. I am not promising lots of pithy material. I wasn’t all that prolific as @MomTFH. But, I wanted to be able to tweet occasionally, and follow people again, so, I signed back up.

Please feel free to follow me, or make suggestions on feed I should follow.

I’m in print!! *link fixed*

I have an article published in the Journal of Perinatal Education:

Social Media, Power, and the Future of VBAC

Special thanks to Amy Romano, who was the lead author and did almost all of the final version of the piece, and to Desirre Andrews, who was the other co-author.

Edited to add: I fixed the link, but now they are asking for pay-per-view. I think if you register for a free trial of Ingenta you can read it for free. If not, let me know.

Post at Mothers in Medicine

Mothers in Medicine is having a Q & A topic week. The contributors are all answering questions submitted by readers. I answered a question about having kids before medical school. Check it out!

Also, if you can’t get enough of me bloviating here and at Mothers in Medicine, I have been involved in the continuing conversation about VBAC at KevinMD here and here.

Guest post at Mothers in Medicine

A little toot toot of my own horn here, but I wanted to share that I have another guest post up at Mothers in Medicine. It is a repost of Advice to a Mom Starting Her Pre-Med.

Enjoy! And, if you’re so inclined, check out the other posters there, too. It’s a great site.

Happy New Year’s Eve!!

I have had a history of throwing New Year’s Eve parties. They have changed, a bit, over the years.

I am planning a fondue party tonight. If anyone is interested in my other side, my ever-so-slightly domestic side, I have a mostly defunct food blog. I have been posting pictures and updates. If it’s your thang, check in and I may even keep up the posting until it gets too hectic.

Happy New Year’s, everybody!!

Another banner day

I saw on my blog stats page that I had two incoming links from Technorati. When I clicked through, I found my little blog on their top 100 health blogs list! In fact, I’m at number 30.

Well, whaddya know?

It’s a nice end to a crap week. It started with my ten year old getting hurt at a local kids’ expensive fun place, and ended with my husband in the hospital with an infected cat bite on his hand. Throw in witnessing some obstetrics in practice that made me want to consider maybe doing endocrinology as a specialty, a take home final exam I had to turn in two days late, only to find out the email didn’t send, and every other minor annoyance from stepping in cat vomit with my bare feet and hitting every. red. light. when I was running late for my brother’s birthday party and low on gas.

So, Technorati. Better be the sign of good things to come.

I’m so stoked!

I have been invited to be an reviewer / contributor to the newest edition of Our Bodies, Ourselves.

I am going to be reviewing a chapter on anatomy and a chapter called “unique to women”. I am interested in seeing what that will include.

I am so excited!
