Bubonic plague???

squirrel I was watching TV the other night when a news story came on about squirrels in Denver showing up positive for the Bubonic plague.

Bubonic plague? Ashes, ashes, we all fall down. Isn’t that also known as the Black Death, and didn’t it almost wipe out Europe?

What’s worse is this quote from the article:

“Every year, about 18 people in the United States die from the plague, according to the federal Center for Disease Control and Prevention.”

Huh? Who knew?

  1. The city squirrels must be meeting up with their desert buddies from a little further South. When I lived in the Southwest you heard about this problem arising in the Four Corners area every summer.

  2. Don’t you remember that event a year or two ago where a lab, I think in New Jersey, “lost” two plague ridden mice? I can tell you there were many many jokes going around about that among the medievalists I know. :)

Sadly, this is not the first time I’ve heard such a tale.

  3. Is it sad that I already knew that plague is endemic in some areas of this country?
